A Journey of Listening
David Murphy’s creative journey began on the Pembrokeshire Coast, where the vast, rhythmic presence of the Atlantic Ocean first shaped his understanding of sound, space and resonance. His early immersion in the natural world is the foundation of his musical life.
At the heart of David’s process is a concept he calls the “Infinite Horizon” : the belief that within every score lies a world of untapped possibility. Central to this is his philosophy that the true power of music resides not in the individual notes themselves, but in the profound relationships between them.
This exploration begins long before he reaches the podium. David’s daily creative journey begins with an early morning schedule of meditation and yoga, which centres his focus before transitioning into rigorous practice and score preparation. The momentum generated by this process carries through to the collaborative energy of rehearsals and culminates in the final performance – sharing the search for the infinite horizon with audiences.
By weaving the technical and musicological mastery inherited from Léon Barzin and Sir Charles Mackerras with the meditative depth of Indian philosophy from his time with Ravi Shankar and Amjad Ali Khan, David creates an intensely productive rehearsal environment rooted in Deep Listening.
Beyond the Score: The Acoustic Awakening
For musicians and audiences sharing a performance space, David’s process is an invitation to move beyond the printed page and into the physical architecture of sound. David’s work focuses on a “Translucency of Sound,“ a state where the orchestra can consciously perceive overtones and “difference” or “combination” tones—the shimmering, hidden acoustic layers that emerge when an ensemble achieves a heightened state of resonance.
In this space, “routine” falls away; the music is no longer a historical artifact, but a living, breathing realisation of sound.
This creative journey extends beyond the concert hall into educational work in schools and the community, where he shares his vision of music as a bridge for connection. For David, whether working with students or leading an orchestra, every moment is a vital step in exploring the limitless potential of the musical experience.
